Prepare to help others achieve better health or pursue their performance goals as a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN). D’Youville’s two-year Master of Science (MS in Nutrition and Dietetics is designed to help you build knowledge and gain experience in medical nutrition therapy, community nutrition, and food service management.
Our program includes a concentration in Advanced Nutrition Practice which offers higher-level coursework in complex clinical conditions, program planning, nutrition entrepreneurship, and research. In as few as two years, you can complete the required coursework and 1,000 hours of supervised practice to become eligible for the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) national credentialing examination to become an RDN.
YOU WILL:
- Help individuals and communities prevent and manage disease through evidence-based nutrition
- Provide medical nutrition therapy across clinical, community, and food-service settings
- Complete 1,000+ hours of supervised practice in local facilities
- Plan, develop, and evaluate nutrition intervention programs
- Complete capstone research and prepare for the CDR national credentialing exam
GRADUATE READY TO BECOME A REGISTERED DIETITIAN NUTRITIONIST
Graduates are eligible to take the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) national credentialing examination to become an RDN. In New York State, graduates who earn the RDN credential are also eligible to apply for the Certified Dietitian/Nutritionist (CDN) credential.
COURSES AND REQUIREMENTS
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
- An undergraduate degree and the following courses with a grade of C or better:
- 2 semesters in General Chemistry with Lab
- 1 semester in Organic Chemistry with Lab
- 1 semester in Biochemistry with Lab
- 1 semester in Microbiology with Lab
- 2 semesters in Anatomy and Physiology
- 1 semester in Statistics
- 2 semesters in Social Sciences (e.g. sociology, psychology, philosophy, or anthropology)
- 1 semester in the following courses: Principles of Nutrition, Food Science, Food and Culture, Life Cycle Nutrition, Nutritional Biochemistry, Nutrition Education, Nutrition Assessment, Food Science, Food Service Management, Quantity Food Preparation, Introduction to Dietetics Profession, Community Nutrition
- A BS degree in Nutrition from an ACEND accredited program will be accepted in lieu of the pre-requisite courses.
- Minimum overall G.P.A. 3.00/4.00 scale

CAREER OUTCOMES
Registered dietitian nutritionists are food and nutrition experts who help people prevent and manage disease, promote healthy lifestyles, and optimize performance. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that dietitians and nutritionists earned a median annual wage of $73,850 in May 2024.
Clinical Dietitians
In hospitals and other healthcare settings, RDNs provide medical nutrition therapy for patients with conditions ranging from diabetes and heart disease to complex critical-care and renal needs.
Community Dietitians
RDNs design and deliver nutrition education and intervention programs aimed at improving public or population health. They may work in community health centers, public health agencies, and in other settings.
Sports, Food Industry, and Private Practice
RDNs may also work in university athletics and sports facilities, food and beverage companies, private practice, research, or academia.
Disclaimers and Accreditation Statement
Students who complete all requirements are awarded a M.S. degree in Nutrition and Dietetics at the time of graduation and are eligible to take the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) national credentialing examination to become an RDN. Each graduate receives a verification statement, which documents completion of all academic, supervised practice and degree requirements for the Coordinated Program and D’Youville University.
In New York State, graduates who obtain the RDN credential are eligible to apply to receive the Certified Dietitian/Nutritionist (CDN) credential.
